How the System Functions
The mini-split is comprised of two essential parts: the indoor air handler and the outdoor compressor. These two components are attached to each other with copper, refrigerant lines and electrical wiring.
Both the indoor and outdoor units have a coil inside them. This permits the system to move heat from one location to another. In the summertime, the mini-split acts like an air conditioner by gathering heat from the indoor air and transferring that heat via the refrigerant to be exhausted outside. In cooler months, the system reverses itself and collects heat from the outside air and sends it inside via the same refrigerant lines. Amazingly, new compressor technology enables these highly efficient systems to extract enough heat from cold sub-zero air to heat your home!
In larger applications, one outside condenser can serve multiple indoor air handlers with a separate set of refrigerant lines and electrical wires connecting to each individual indoor air handler. The indoor air handlers commonly look like small cabinets mounted high on the wall in each room. Plus, each indoor unit can be controlled individually, so the temperature is perfect for every room.
Older homes benefit from this split-system technology, too. There is not a need to rip open walls to install ductwork to cool and heat that attic space you’ve been dying to turn into a bonus room. Refrigerant lines are much, much smaller than ductwork, and they can be run through interior spaces or on the outside of the building and concealed within an attractive conduit system that can be painted to match the building’s exterior color. The result is a comfortable, usable living space with a minimum amount of wall repair work after the installation is complete.
The systems also provide air filtration using either washable or disposable filters. This results in a cleaner, healthier environment in each room.
Lastly, both the indoor and outdoor units utilize modern fan and blower designs. Consequently, the indoor units operate “whisper quiet,” and the outdoor condenser produces a small fraction of the amount of noise that a typical air conditioner condenser creates.
